Expertise

After qualifying as a chartered surveyor, Alan undertook a law degree from which he took the Bar Vocational Course and was called to the bar (middle temple) in 2008, also qualifying as a member of the Chartered Institution of Arbitrators, gaining a diploma in adjudication in the process.

Alan has practiced across most disciplines within the building surveying faculty, most recently in insurance-related subsidence claims and currently finds himself at Gateley Smithers Purslow, once more, predominantly involved with property-related insurance claims and supporting project management duties.

How do you help clients?

With my current role I achieve great satisfaction in trying to deliver a fair and balanced outcome from the perspective of both the insured and our instructing clients.

Experience

  1. Providing legal and regulatory assistance where clients sometimes do not understand the options available to them in terms of achieving their development ambitions.
  2. Having a reasonable knowledge of theory form and construction techniques, being able to assist the client in realising their project by mixing alternative, old and new construction techniques.
  3. Advising a client who was owed a considerable amount of money by a large contractor and advising them on the adjudication process which resulted in a considerable settlement without actually going through the full process.
  4. Advising clients on refurbishment/ alteration projects enabling them to utilise the available space to its true potential.
  5. Advising generally with other construction professionals in terms of alternative ideas and processes.
