Richard specialises in project risk management and dispute avoidance advice as well as the resolution of substantial complex construction disputes through litigation, arbitration, adjudication and other forms of ADR.  Since 1998, he has carried out in excess of 150 adjudications acting for Owners, Contractors, Funders, and Construction and Engineering professionals in all fields.

He has significant experience of advising in connection with major infrastructure projects, particularly in the building, power, civils/infrastructure and process engineering sectors.  He has advised on procurement strategies, risk management and dispute avoidance and management for clients on projects involving hotels, tramways, multi-media stadia, process and petrochem plants and universities, as well as disputes within the residential, utilities and retail sectors.


He is familiar with most standard-form contracts including JCT, ICE, NEC/EEC, IMechE, IChemE, FIDIC and frequently advises clients in relation to bespoke and complex conditions of contract and project documentation. As well as offering a full range of contentious construction services, Richard also provides real-time advice in relation to ongoing project issues.


Richard enjoys field sports and is a keen game fisherman.


Acting for the two defendants in one of the earliest reported cases on adjudication and the important definition of the word “dispute” under the HGCRA’96 (see Fastrack Contractors –v- Morrision and Impregilo [2000] B.L.R. 168)

Successfully acting for a major public body with regard to substantial disputes relating to a highly publicised, £1.2 billion tram infrastructure project in Edinburgh which was in delay by three years and over budget by 140%

Acting for a power contractor in relation to numerous adjudication claims (combined value in excess of £100 million) relating to two innovative gas turbine CHP plants located in Blackburn and in Stoke;

Acting for, and advising, a global power contractor in relation to a £550 million biomass conversion project at Eggborough Power Station in West Yorkshire;

Successfully defending an international power contractor in relation a number of adjudications and proceedings in the TCC relating to the issue of set-off against a Scheme Adjudicator’s Decision, multiple disputes under the Scheme and the crystallisation of disputes in without prejudice correspondence  (see RWE Npower Plc –v- Alstom Power Limited [2010] EWHC 3061);

Advising an Owner in relation to a UK domestic arbitration under CIArb rules concerning the design and construction of a project to encapsulate nuclear Intermediate Level Waste (ILW) resin.

Advising the European Commission in relation to claims arising from the construction of  combined embassy facility in Abuja, Nigeria (circa £20 million);

Successfully defending multi adjudication proceedings brought by a major contractor concerning delays and variations to a £65 million PFI-styled, student accommodation project at a University;.
