Growth, confidence and change: reflections from our 2026 Economic and Political Outlook Forum
Growth, taxation, devolution and regional investment were among the central themes explored at our 2026 Economic and Political Outlook Forum.
Introduced by Richard Healey, partner and head of our London office, the event brought together an expert panel chaired by BBC presenter Clive Myrie. He was joined by Simon Jack, BBC business editor; Bronwen Maddox, director and chief executive of Chatham House; and Jack Meaning, UK chief economist at Barclays.
Through a wide-ranging panel discussion and audience Q&A, the speakers considered the choices facing government and business as the UK seeks to strengthen its economic performance amid continued political, fiscal and technological change.
Growth and taxation: finding the right balance
A central question was whether the Government can deliver stronger economic growth while maintaining a high tax burden on businesses. The discussion examined the effect of recent tax changes on investment confidence, the balance between fiscal repair and growth, and the measures business leaders will be looking for from future Budgets.
Unlocking regional growth
The panel also explored the part regions outside London can play in the UK’s next phase of growth. Devolution and infrastructure investment featured in a discussion about closing regional productivity gaps and giving local leaders the tools to build confidence, encourage investment and support innovation.
Leading through uncertainty
Taken together, the themes reflected the complex environment in which organisations are making decisions. While there are no simple answers, the discussion reinforced the importance of long-term thinking, informed leadership and collaboration between government, business and regional stakeholders.
Reflecting on the discussion, Richard Healey said: “I leave this year’s event optimistic about the months ahead. The barriers to growth are significant, but UK businesses have repeatedly demonstrated their resilience, adaptability and determination. That should give us confidence in their ability not only to respond to the challenges ahead, but to identify and seize new opportunities.
“Our Mansion House event brings senior leaders together to explore the economic and political issues shaping their organisations and the wider UK economy. I hope our guests left with valuable insight, fresh perspectives and renewed confidence for the year ahead. Thank you to everyone who joined us and to our expert panel for such a thoughtful and engaging discussion. We look forward to continuing the conversation next year.”
