As part of our journey towards Net Zero by 2040, we are continuing to focus on reusing and recovering resources to reduce waste and associated emissions.

In Birmingham, our IT team reviewed legacy equipment held in storage and identified items still in good working condition. Rather than sending these assets for disposal or recycling, they were refurbished, securely wiped and donated to Birmingham Metropolitan College (BMet), extending their useful life and reducing electronic waste.

The donation also reflects a strong connection between the organisations. Two BMet T-Level students, Porchevi Kihela-Polesa and Zerub Abiy, spent 18 months working alongside our IT team and are now valued Gateley colleagues. Their experience helped inspire the team to ensure the equipment could be reused to support future students, linking skills development with responsible resource use.

The donated computers and networking hardware will now be used in BMet’s digital lab, providing hands-on learning opportunities for students. By prioritising reuse over replacement, the initiative reduces waste while supporting education and access to technology.

We continue to strive to make practical decisions which deliver both environmental and social benefits, reducing carbon impact while supporting learning and future talent.
