Tour de Gateley 2022
- Time: 8:30 a.m. - 6 p.m.
- Networking / In person
- Sandon Hall, Stafford
Our charity event is set to return on Thursday 15 September, in support of SportsAid. We are excited to announce that this year there will be a choice of either cycling or walking.
The route will start from the stunning Sandon Hall, with an option to ride 50 miles or 70 miles or complete a shorter circular walk through the beautiful Staffordshire countryside. The day will include lunch and finish with hospitality against the backdrop of the striking 19th-century country manor.
The entry fee for the ride is £45 or for the walk is £25 - all fees will be donated to SportsAid, a charity partner of Gateley.
We hope that by September, things will have moved on positively in respect of COVID but just to note that this event will only take place if it is safe to do so within government guidelines
More about the routes
Cycle routes
This year our cycle routes have a slightly gentler start, heading West around Stafford, through pretty little hamlets and villages like Seighford and Haughton before arriving at the first feed - the Red Lion at Bradley which comes just before the 20 mile point. The 50 and 70 mile routes divide at the 24 mile point with the longer route going on to pass Cosford Air Museum and the historic landmarks of White Ladies Priory and Boscobel House before the routes converge once again. Shortly after the routes re-join, there’s the second food stop of the day, lunch at the Moat House in Acton Trussel. After lunch, the final section of the route skirts the edge of Cannock Chase and passes through the grounds of Shugborough Hall before making its way back to Sandon via the final challenge of the day - Sandon Bank.
Walking route
A new addition for 2022, the proposed walking route will depart from Sandon Hall taking an early climb up onto the historic Hopton Battlefield, passing the English Civil war memorial. From there the route passes the Staffordshire County Showground and crosses open fields on the way to Milford Common where you can see Cannock Chase, you will then enter the grounds of Shugborough Hall, a National Trust site and former home of Lord Lichfield. Following lunch you will cross the Essex bridge to leave Shugborough and join the canal providing a flat scenic route that takes you back to Sandon.
All entry fees for this year's event will be donated to SportsAid. In 2021 we raised an impressive £3000 for the charity and hope to beat this total at this year’s event.
The charity supports over 1,000 athletes each year – the vast majority aged 12 to 18 – by providing them with a financial award to help towards training and competition costs.
The charity's extensive alumni stretch across the generations with Emma Raducanu, Dame Jessica Ennis-Hill, Sir Mo Farah, Sir Steve Redgrave, Laura Kenny CBE, Ellie Simmonds OBE, Adam Peaty MBE, and Tom Daley, having all received SportsAid awards. The charity’s impressive track record was highlighted at the Tokyo 2020 Olympics and Paralympics where SportsAid alumni managed to return a stunning haul of 141 medals collectively across the two Games.
Highlights from Tour de Gateley 2021

"Just a note to say thank you for arranging such a superb day yesterday – it was so well organised and a really enjoyable ride, even if that last hill nearly did it for me! Congratulations as well for the money raised for SportsAid."
Sophie Hallett-Jones Commercial Director, Wright Industries
"I just wanted to say a massive thank you to you guys for sorting a really fantastic sportive yesterday. Everything was perfect from the arrival admin to the mid ride feeds, safety and mechanics etc and those fab pizzas and ‘sundowner’ beers at the end at Sandon Hall just topped off a great day! It must take a huge amount of effort and prep to pull off an event like this - and to raise funds for the next Emma Raducanu makes it even more worthwhile."
