Expertise

Jim’s background is as a site manager working on large mixed residential sites from inception to completion, through to EODs. In the last few years, Jim has moved from site management to a Clerk of Works role.

Jim is highly proficient in construction processes, building laws and regulations, with extensive experience and a broad understanding of quality benchmarking across a range of disciplines. He has a very thorough knowledge of construction inspection practices, including the ability to assess that both workmanship and materials meet the required standards. This knowledge has been gained through many years of experience working for large volume house builders.

How do you help clients?

I help clients to check construction plans and specifications to compare them with what is being built on-site, helping to stop potential lengthy delays and/ or remediation works. I help clients identify potential issues that may compromise programme/ handover dates.

I help clients by creating regular reports, as per requirements and sending these to the build managers and the client, always maintaining regular communication with them, thus building mutual trust and helping both to make informed decisions.

I have excellent working knowledge of health and safety legislation, mindfully bringing any shortfalls observed to the attention of senior management.

Experience

  1. Substitution of materials that were deemed non-compliant to building regulations, early identification in the build to ensure there were no delays and the plots are building regulations compliant, handing over properties on time.
  2. Drawing review prior to the prestart meeting, highlighting the builder’s failure to meet new regulations (ADM). Highlighted at an early stage, enabling the builder to revise their drawings without costly rectification works and time lost on programme.
  3. Site not building to Spec/ DWGs. Early identification, providing solutions with good communication, enabling a quick solution with no delays.
  4. Hazard/ incomplete works identification prior to handovers. Properties were complete and safe but safe access and egress were lacking. After consultation with the builders and their H&S advisors, a works/ traffic plan was planned and implemented, enabling safe and controlled handovers.
