Anya Mottram PhD

Expertise

Anya joined Symbiosis IP as a trainee in 2024. She is training to become a UK Chartered Patent Attorney and Registered European Patent Attorney.

Anya began honing her expertise with a first-class B.Sc. (Hons) in Virology from the University of Glasgow, followed by a Distinction in an MRes in Infection Biology from the University of Manchester, where her research focused on macrophage proliferation and activation.

This academic journey led Anya to completing a PhD in Molecular and Cellular Biology, through which a strong technical background in Biotechnology was developed. Her doctoral research focused on harnessing tissue culture models, including monolayers, organoids and precision cut tissue slices, to investigate the replication cycle and pathogenesis of Hepatitis C virus. She also gained experience working for a spin-out biotech company on next-generation diagnostics.

Anya has particular expertise in state of the art life science fields, such as: viral vectors, tissue models, antibodies, antibody therapeutics, stem cell technologies, cancer biology, gene therapies, biomarkers, diagnostics, vaccine technology, RNA therapeutics, and synthetic biology.

Experience

1. Prepared patent attorney opinions and letters for academic inventions before licensing or spinout formation.
2. Coordinated with colleagues to provide technical life science expertise during patent prosecution for a leading life sciences company developing novel immunotherapies and diagnostics.
3. Provided robust IP audits of intellectual property portfolios for SMEs applying for government grants or innovation funding or strategic partnerships.
4. Drafted, filed and prosecuted patent submissions for a variety of academic institutes and startups.
