Bob Maynard is a highly-regarded contentious construction lawyer with more than 30 years’ experience advising domestic and international clients across the engineering and construction industry.

He specialises in complex, high-value disputes in litigation, arbitration and adjudication, as well as alternative dispute resolution processes, particularly mediation.

In addition to formal proceedings, Bob advises on project strategy, risk management and forensic investigation work, helping clients navigate technically demanding and commercially sensitive disputes.

Bob has particular expertise in the energy and natural resources sector, utilities (water, electricity and gas), nuclear decommissioning, transport infrastructure and major commercial property developments, including retail, leisure and office schemes. He regularly acts for leading contractors, developers, utilities, public authorities and specialist subcontractors.

Experience

  1. Advising a major US power supplier in UNCITRAL arbitration proceedings against a European contractor in a USD100m+ dispute concerning the design and construction of a lignite-fired power station, proceeding to a four-week hearing before settlement.
  2. Advising one of the UK’s largest retailers on the multi-party dispute arising from the collapse of the Gerrards Cross tunnel and consequent blockage of the Chiltern Rail line, implementing and managing an innovative structured mediation process that achieved settlement without formal proceedings.
  3. Advising a previously publicly-owned entity in a £60m dispute relating to the decommissioning of a major UK nuclear facility under an NEC contract, resolving the matter through adjudication and settlement.
  4. Advising a large UK water company in High Court and Court of Appeal proceedings arising from a defective sequence batch reactor at a major sewage treatment works, following a three-month TCC trial.
  5. Advising one of the UK’s largest international contractors in TCC proceedings that resulted in a significant judgment making new law on economic duress.
