About us

Our business

Gateley is a professional services group which combines technical expertise with service excellence.

We support our clients in achieving their business and personal success by working alongside them as their trusted adviser.

Bringing together legal services with building advisory services, leadership consultancy and IP advisory services, enables us to provide a ‘one stop shop’, saving our clients’ time and money.

As a listed business, there are many differences between Gateley and a traditional equity model – from our ability to acquire other businesses to the way we reward and incentivise all employees – but when it comes to our results, one key difference is that we share our results with the market, and within the business, at various points in the financial calendar. At every stage, this transparency is shared within our business, so colleagues understand the impact they are having and the contribution which they are making. Find out more on our investors page

We are purpose-led

Our purpose is to deliver results that delight our clients, inspire our people and support our communities. We do this by:

  • being forward thinking about the services that we deliver to our clients and the working environment we provide for our people;
  • being straight talking about what matters, inside and outside of our business; and
  • thinking differently about what we do and how we do it.

Our values define us

The way we behave as a business is captured in our Gateley Team Spirit. These values underpin how we work within Gateley and with the clients, suppliers and professional intermediaries that we work with every day.

At Gateley we embrace people’s ambitions encouraging them to explore and reach their potential both personally and professionally. Although ambitious for our collective success, we are humble in our approach, quietly confident and never boastful. We focus on putting the client (and their needs) front and centre.

We are forward thinking about the services that we deliver to our clients and the working environment we provide for our people. It is important that we can think differently about what we do and how we do it.

We recognise one size never fits all and people perform better and are happier if they can bring their whole selves to work. We are individuals who relish being part of a diverse and inclusive team.

When we say we will do something we do it, maintaining a clear focus on the doing, not the hurdle. In return we are trusted to get on with things.

Gateley people care and are friendly to the core. We genuinely enjoy working together as a team. The whole is greater than the sum of the individual parts.

  • STEAMhouse is an organisation driving innovation and research for major long-term growth across the West Midlands region.

Fundraising and volunteering

We have Gateley Gives teams in every office who coordinate fundraising activities throughout the year and are the driving forces behind local initiatives that align to our Responsible Business ethos.

Volunteering plays an important part of our purpose by supporting communities. Since introducing our volunteering policy, which grants our people 15 hours annually to dedicate to good causes they care about, we’ve worked hard to embed this policy across the Group. All activities are recorded on SID, our Social Impact Dashboard.

Equity, diversity and inclusion

Gateley values the differences that a diverse workforce can bring.

Part of the reason for listing in 2015 was to create a diverse business which could respond to the needs of our clients in a more effective way.

Diversity remains a key ambition of our Group, not only in the services that we offer but in the people that we employ and the clients that we work with. We are better advisers to our clients because of the diversity of experiences and skills that our people bring.

Diversity is about different perspectives and extends beyond gender and ethnicity, to sexual orientation, gender identity, social mobility, disability, and other challenges that can lead to disadvantage. As a Group which was formed with diversity at its core, we are committed to creating a diverse and inclusive workforce where everyone has room to breathe and can bring their whole selves to work. Gateley values the differences that a diverse workforce can bring.

Provides a welcoming, supportive, and confidential space for colleagues across the Group on issues of disability.

Ability is our network group which supports employees with disabilities and raises awareness around neurodiversity. Ability has been established to provide a welcoming, supportive and confidential space for colleagues on issues of disability and raise awareness of disability-related issues across the Group.

Nurtures our talent and supports their careers.

Inspire has been set up to nurture, develop and provide support to our talent with a particular focus on career milestones and enabling our people to successfully carve out the careers they want. Through Inspire, we created:

  • a Women in Leadership programme to support and retain our female talent;
  • a networking group for parents provides an opportunity for working parents to share tips, ideas and support one another as they try to strike the right balance between excelling at work and being a good parent; and
  • Ignite and Influence networking groups, which bring together talent across legal, consulting and business support.

Supports our LGBTQ+ community, raising awareness across our business and collaborating with related external groups and networks.

Pride provides a welcoming, supportive, safe and confidential space for staff affected by sexual orientation and gender identity issues and is a place where they can share experiences, ideas or concerns. It also raises awareness of LGBTQ+ issues across Gateley and ensures enhanced awareness is reflected in a positive, inclusive and fulfilling working environment.

Takes care of the health and wellbeing of our employees.

Our Thrive network supports the health and wellbeing of all employees to promote high levels of performance both physically and mentally across the group. The Thrive committee runs a series of events and training programmes throughout the year to raise awareness and to inspire our people to take care of themselves and those around them.

Recognises, celebrates, and supports people from different cultures, religions and backgrounds.

Unity is all about being comfortable to bring your whole self to work including all the things that make you unique. As a business we value diversity and inclusion and are working hard to encourage, inspire and support those from all backgrounds to join our organisation.

Our community groups

To ensure we create a sense of belonging and a culture where everyone can be themselves, we have created five community groups within Gateley to support our people. These internal communities create a place of debate where people can learn from each other, educate each other and celebrate our differences.

Gender pay gap

Gender pay gap reporting is based on Government methodology focusing on the difference in average pay between men and women in an organisation. Gender pay is not the same as equal pay.

You can read an explanation of our data and details of the initiatives within our business to narrow the gender pay gap:

Sustainability

We are looking at every aspect of our business to improve the use of resources

We are committed to reducing the impact that we have on the environment and will achieve net zero by 2040, halving our emissions by 2030.

To achieve, this we are looking at every aspect of our business to improve the use of resources. As a professional services group, the key sustainability issues facing our business are in relation to our offices and energy usage, travel, use of paper and ensuring a sustainable supply chain.

Office network

We work on a hybrid basis, encouraging our colleagues to be at home no more than two days per week. As a result, we have been able to review our office network, consolidating office premises where we can, and exiting floors which we no longer need to occupy. In certain teams we have introduced hot-desking to reduce the space that we require.

We have switched our energy supply in our three largest offices to 100% renewable energy and will continue to make this transition at contract renewal.

Travel and carbon offsetting

We use MS Teams wherever possible to reduce the level of travel which our colleagues undertake. Where we do travel, we encourage colleagues to look at public transport or car sharing. We offset our travel emissions and have selected the Katingan Peatland Restoration and Conservation Project which seeks to protect and restore 149,800 hectares of peatland ecosystems in Indonesia, to offer local people sustainable sources of income, and to tackle global climate change.

Use of paper

Across many teams, we have been able to reduce the amount of paper used and printing required by introducing alternative ways of working including the use of DocuSign technology to enable documents to be signed electronically from any device, in a secure and encrypted way and every desk having two monitors to enable documents to be compared on screen rather than being printed. As a result of our reduction in printing, we were able to remove most of our desk printers, which were donated to local charities through social enterprise Make Good Grow.

Sustainable supply chain

As part of our procurement processes, we review suppliers’ sustainability credentials. By way of example, we have worked with B-certified supplier Project Merchandise to procure sustainable promotional items, using recycled materials or identifying products that switch out synthetics for natural materials, avoid harmful chemicals, or cut excess packaging. For every £500 Gateley spends with Project Merchandise, they plant 25 trees and offset 0.5 tonnes of CO2.
