Liam specialises in financial restructurings and international finance and is head of Gateley’s Financial Restructuring and Special Situations practice. He also leads Gateley’s Capital Solutions group.

He has almost 20 years experience advising on domestic and cross-border restructuring, special situation and finance transactions, frequently involving complex and bespoke capital structures and financing arrangements.

He advises creditors, debtors, sponsors and strategic investors on a diverse range of financial restructuring and international financing matters, including recapitalisations and refinancings, specialised lending transactions, liability management exercises, real estate finance and acquisition finance. He also assists investors (including investment banks, hedge funds and private equity houses) with strategic investments in par, distressed and special situation credits.

Liam has undertaken several secondments, including to global investment banks where he has advised on both distressed and new money transactions.

  1. Advising a leading oil company on its over c.US$500m balance sheet restructuring.
  2. Advising a global publishing business on its c.US$7bn restructuring.
  3. Advising a securitisation vehicle on the financing aspects of its over US$1bn scheme of arrangement.
  4. Advising a mezzanine lender in connection with the distressed acquisition and associated c.€600m refinancing of a shopping centre.
  5. Advising a global insurance company as co-chair of a co-ordinating committee of creditors on the restructuring of c.US$500m of sovereign debt.
  6. Advising a committee of bondholders in connection with the restructuring of a US$450m multi-tranche securitisation of wind farms.
  7. Advising various buyers of European distressed commercial real estate and non-performing loans, including a global investment manager in connection with the distressed acquisition of four extended-stay hotels and an associated residential property portfolio.
  8. Advising credit investors, creditors and noteholder/ lender committees on various restructurings, including Four Seasons, Belize, Belvedere, Bilcare, Breeze III, Breeze IV, IVG Immobilien, Houghton Mifflin Harcourt, SEAT Pagine, Ferretti, Orion Cable, Euromedica, Risanamento, SAUR, NAC, Norwegian Air, Cityjet and Quinn.
